Lecture - The Wrist Joint Flashcards
What sort of joint is the wrist joint?
A synovial ellipsoid joint
Which bones articulate at the wrist?
Distal - proximal row of carpals except pisiform - i.e.:
Scaphoid, lunate and triquetum
Proximal - distal radius and articular disc
Does the ulna make up part of the wrist joint?
Explain
No
Articular disc sits between it and the carpals
Which bones make up the convex surface of the wrist, and which make up the concave surface?
Convex - carpals
Concave - distal radius + disc
What 2 things give the wrist joint stability?
Joint capsule
Ligaments
What does the outer layer of the joint capsule of the wrist attach to?
What is its texture?
Radius, ulna and proximal carpals
Fibrous
How many ligaments provide major stability to the wrist joint?
Name them.
4 -
Dorsal and Palmar radiocarpal ligaments
Ulnar and Radial Collateral ligaments
What is the role of the radiocarpal ligaments?
Palmar - ensures hand supinates with forearm
Dorsal - ensures hand pronates with forearm
Where do the radiocarpal ligaments extend from and to?
From radius to both rows of carpals
Where does the ulnar collateral ligament of the wrist extend from and to?
From the ulnar styloid process to the triquetum and the pisiform
Where does the radial collateral ligament extend from and to?
From radial styloid process to the scaphoid and trapezium
What is the function of the collateral ligaments of the wrist?
Prevent excess lateral displacement
Along which two axes does movement occur at the wrist?
Flexion/extension
Adduction/abduction
Which muscles perform flexion of the wrist?
Flexor carpi radialis
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Flexor digitorum superficialis - minor role only
Which muscles perform extension at the wrist?
Extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis
Extensor carpi ulnaris
Extensor digitorum - minor role only
