What do I tell patients about allopurinol in terms of how it helps and how to reduce risk of side effects?

A
  • it helps stop gout - dissolves the crystals
  • tophi can’t form
  • reduced attacks
  • drink lots of water to help reduce kidney stones
  • could make gout worse at first

A

hypercalcemia
- affects heart
- MSK weakness
- CNS issues
- GI constipation
- possible kidney stones

  • esophagitis is not a normal response
  • must give with water and patient sitting
  • no not eat 30 min after ingesting
