A
Can cause kidney stones

What do I tell patients about allopurinol in terms of how it helps and how to reduce risk of side effects?
A
- it helps stop gout - dissolves the crystals
- tophi can’t form
- reduced attacks
- drink lots of water to help reduce kidney stones
- could make gout worse at first

What are some adverse effects of Calcium?
A
hypercalcemia
- affects heart
- MSK weakness
- CNS issues
- GI constipation
- possible kidney stones

What is an important consideration with Alendronate (fosamax) bisphosphonate?
A
- esophagitis is not a normal response
- must give with water and patient sitting
- no not eat 30 min after ingesting
- do not chew or suck pills
