What does the encoder/decoder model of communication entail? (2)
- based on information theory; codes going from source A to B are a way of reducing uncertainty
- meaning of the message is important
What are the 2 issues of the encoder/decoder model?
- The same message can mean something different in a different context
- Nonverbal behaviors are dependent of context and person and they’re not taken into account
What does the intentionalist model of communication entail? (2)
- Communication is about conveying intentions
- Messages (in what form) are just a form or way of communicating intentions
What is searle’s speech act theory within internationalist model of communication? (2)

- Illocuitonary = demaning/promising/doing
- Perlocutionairy = achieve som sort of response from addresse

What does the perspective taking model of communication entail? (3)
- We all have different perspectives due to experiences and those experiences influence our understanding of comms
- Focus on shared context that must be identified or created to produce and comprehend messages
- Focus on the perspective taking by the speaker!
What types of models are: encoder/decoder, intentionalist and perspective – versus – dialogic models and what is their difference (3)
- they are literary models; individuals acts of production and comprehension
- comms are developed face-to-face and that shapes communication
- previous models about conveying info and this about a shared social world
What is the dialogic model of conversation?
- Communication is not combined outputs of 2 processors, but a joint accomplishment of participants to achieve a communicative goal
- Information exchange as a means to create a shared social world
