Week 6 Friday Flashcards
Trunk and spinal column muscles
a few large ones and lots of small ones
Erector spinae (sacrospinalis)
largest muscle
extends on each side of spinal column from pelvic region to cranium
divided into 3 muscles:
- spinalis, longissimus, and iliocostalis
- from medial to lateral side, has attachments in lumbar, thoracic, and cervical regions
- actually made up on 9 muscles
sternocleidomastoid and splenius muscles
large muscles involved in cervical and head movements
Large abdominal muscles-lumbar movements
rectus abdominis, external abdominal oblique, internal abdominal oblique, and quadratus lumborum
Numerous small muscles of the trunk and spinal column
many originate on one vertebra and insert on next vertebra, important in functioning of spine
Trapezius
Origin: Spinous process (C7, T1-2), base of skull
Insertion: posterior, lateral clavicle, acromion process, scapular spine
Location: posterior
Movements: Elevation (upper and middle), depression (lower), retraction, upward rotation (middle and lower)
Rhomboid Major and Minor
Origin: Spinous process (C7, T1-5)
Insertion: Medial border of scapula below the spine of the scapula
Location: Posterior/medial
Movements: Downward rotation, elevation, retraction
Levator Scapulae
Origin: Transverse processes (C1-C4) of upper 4 vertebrae
Insertion: medial border of the scapula
Location: posterior
Movements: Elevation (primary), retraction, downward rotation (assists)
Cervical muscles
Capitis
- originate C vertebrae
- insert occipital bone
Anterior-flexors
-lateral flexion
Posterior-extensors
- Rotation
- Lateral flexion
Largest and most powerful cervical muscles
Sternocleidomastoid- lateral
Splenius-2 - Posterior
Sternocleidomastoid
Origin: Sternal manubrium, anterior medial clavicle
Insertion: mastoid process of temporal bone
Location: lateral
Movements: flexion, lateral flexion, rotation
Splenius (capitis, cervicis)
Origin: (inferior)
- Spinous process of C-7-T4 (CA)
- Spinous processes of T3-T6 (CE)
Insertion:
- Mastoid process and occipital bone (CA)
- Transverse process of C1-3 (CE)
Location: Posterior
Movements: Cervical spine: Extension
Rotation, flexion
Erector Spinae (sacrospinalis)
Origin: spinous process of lower thoracic and lumbar
Insertion: spinous processes of cervical and upper thoracic
Location: posterior
Movements: (spine)
- Extension (C & L)
- ipsilateral flexion (C & L)
Muscle is thickest in C and L regions - most movement
Controls forward flexion, extension of the trunk, posterior stability (posture)
Quadratus Lumborum
Origin: Iliac crest
Insertion: 12th rib and transverse process of the lumbar vertebrae
Actions: Lateral flexion, lumbar extension
Multifidus
Origin: posterior sacrum, superior iliac spine
Insertion: spinous processes of vertebrae excluding C1
Actions: lateral flexion, trunk extension
