Muscles of the shoulder girdle - scapula
Trapezius
Rhomboid (major/minor)
Levator scapulae
Trapezius
Origin-
-upper fibers- base of skull, occipital protuberance, and posterior ligaments of the neck, spinous process of C7 and T1-T12
Insertion-posteror aspect of lateral third of clavicle, medial border of acromion process, and upper border of scapular spine
Action-
- upper fibers- elevation of scapula, extension and rotation of head - middle fibers- elevation, upward rotation, and adduction - lower fibers- depression, adduction, and upward rotation
Levator scapulae
origin- Transverse process of C1-C4
Insertion- medial border of scapula above spine
action- elevation of scapula
Rhomboid (major and minor)
Origin- Spinous process of C7 and T1-T5
Insertion- Medial border of scapula below spine
Action- Rhomboid major and minor work together. Retraction (adduction), Downward rotation: from upward rotated position they draw scapula in downward rotation. Elevation: slight upward movement accompanying adduction
Sagittal plane Flexors of the shoulder
Pectoralis major (upper fibers)
anterior deltoid
biceps brachii
Sagittal plane Extensors of the shoulder
pectoralis major (lower fibers)
latissimus dorsi
teres major
triceps brachii
Frontal plane abductors of the shoulder
pectoralis major (upper fibers)
Deltoid (all)
Supraspinatus
Frontal plane adductors of the shoulder
Pectoralis major (lower fibers)
Latissimus dorsi
Teres major
Transverse plane external rotators of the shoulder
infraspinatus
teres minor
Transverse plane internal rotators of the shoulder
pectoralis major (both)
subscapularis
latissimus dorsi
teres major (resistance)
Diagonal and horizontal adductors of the shoulder
pectoralis major (both)
coracobrachialis
anterior deltoid
Diagonal and horizontal abductors of the shoulder
teres minor
infraspinatus
posterior deltoid
