What are the 3 phases of peplaus theory of interpersonal relationships?
- Orientation phase (introductions, get to know them)
- Working phase (select interventions, help patient improve)
- Termination phase (prepare to end relationship, lead up and prepare patient)
What are the components of nurse-client relationship?
- Trust
- Respect- recognize individuals work regardless of socio-economic status, attribute, nature of health problems.
- Professional intimacy- physical activities that nurse provides (bath), psych./spirit./social elements in care plan.
- Empathy- understand/validate with meaning meaning of experience for patient and family.
- Power- RN should use it in caring matter to meet patients needs, RN should be aware of power imbalances
How can we act on empathy?
Attending behaviour, empathetic responses, and recognize requestions for info/action.
What are the principles of interpersonal power?
Power exists in all relationships, power is deceived from a persons ability to meet another persons need in relationships, both partners have power, power is circumstantial, and relational development involves negotiation of each partners power.
What is legitimate power?
Comes from a respect for a position another holds.
What type of power comes from our attraction to another person, or the charisma a person holds?
Referent power.
