What is up award and downward communication?
Upward is flows from subordinates to superiors and helps manager deal quickly with problems. Downward flows from superiors to subordinates via poster, email, fact to face, and meetings.
What is horizontal and outward communication?
Horizontal is among colleagues at same level to coordinate task, share information, solve problems, and mange conflict. Outward communication flows to those outside of organization like customers. Focus on needs of those they serve.
What is interprofessional collaboration?
Professionals from different area of expertise combine respect and shared decision making to develop relationships to maximize health care. They communicate well and trust one another to promote safe and quality care.
What are 6 competencies of CIHC National inter professional competency frameworks?
- Role clarification- understand your role and others, know how to explain your role
- Team functioning- understand team dynamics and teamwork process, set ground rules, resource allocation
- Interprof. conflict resolution- engage with others in constructively addressing conflict
- Collaborative leadership- shared decision making/leadership, shared collab
- Patient/client/family/community centred care- share info with client, seek out and include client as team member
- Interprof. communication- establish teamwork communication principles, listen to other members, ensures everyone has same understanding, share information
What are barriers to communication?
Lack of info shared among members, hierarchy inhibits speaking up, conflict, lack of respect, defensive, different styles of communication.
What is the I-SBAR-R method for communicating?
- Indemnify- who’s calling, who are you calling about
- Situation- state problem, and when it occurred
- Background- what is clinical background and context
- Assessment- what is assessment, latest vital signs
- Recommendation- what needs to be done
- Repeat back- repeat back any orders and clarify questions
Useful for RN report to doctors and shift change report.
What are pros/cons to e communication and facts to face?
EMC: allows contact with strangers, time to compose message, develop new relationships, can help us maintain relationship, BUT open to misinterpretation, nonverbal are different because they rely on words, risks of confidentiality, feedback delayed
FtF: feedback immediate, non verbal cues 40 % of FtF, obtain info from behavior and reactions,
How to avoid online conflict?
Be clear in message, avoid humor, paraphrase your understanding of message, reread message and avoid assumptions, don’t hit send too quick, can move to different medium.
What is netiquette?
Be kind, mindful, check before you share, and respect copyright.
What are the 6 Ps of social media?
Professional (at all times), positive (express opposing opinion respectfully), privacy (separate personal and professional self), pause before you post, protect yourself, and patient/persons face (don’t write about patients or people).
What is the EHR?
Electronic heath record. Communication with health care professionals. has patients medications list, clinical s documents, order entries, lab results, diagnostic imaging.
