What is the symbolic action theory?
Society is bound together through use of symbols. It is the basis of forming interpersonal relationships. A common symbol is understanding between people.
What word describes literal meaning, objective meaning, dictionary definition?
Denotative.
What does connotative mean?
Personal and subjective meaning.
Concrete vs. abstract?
Concrete- physical things we experience with our 5 senses.
Abstract- no physical existence, ideas.
What does arbitrary mean?
Agreed upon general meanings.
What are the power of words?
They create our perceptions, influence our actions/thoughts, affect our relationships, and shape culture.
What is the missed meaning of the same word or confusing a word/context?
Miscommunication.
What are some ways we can establish a supportive relationship?
Solve problems instead of controlling, be genuine/empathize/flexible, and describe your feelings instead of evaluating others behaviour.
What are the 5 steps to behave assertively?
- Describe - how you view situation
- Disclose your feelings
- Identify effects - of others behaviour on you/others
- Be silent - wait for response
- Paraphrase - context/feelings
What does it mean to be able to pursue one’s best interests w/out denying the rights of one’s communication partner?
Assertive.
What does BOOST stand for when giving back verbal feedback?
B= balanced, mix of +/-
O= objective, don’t be too opinionated
O= observed, watch for things client does (body language)
S= specific, notice things
T= timely, not too rushed
What are some style that influence therapeutic communication?
Moderates voice, advocate for client, encourage client involvement, and provide appropriate info using clear language.
What is the primary way to communicate our feelings/attitudes, and demonstrates that actions speak louder than words?
Non-verbal communication.
What is interaction adoption theory?
Interpret others non-verbal messages help us to adapt our communication.
What are the non- verbal communication codes?
1- movement + gestures
2- eye contact
3- facial expression
4- vocal cues
5- spatial zones

7- appearance
What are the 4 functions for eye contact?
Cognitive (gives info), monitor (behaviour of others), regulatory (signal when we talk), expressive (reveal our emotions).
What are the spatial zones?
Intimate space (0-0.5m)
Personal space (0.5-1.5m)
Social space (1.5m-3.5m)
Public space (3.5m +)
What are the 5 movements according to function?
- Emblem- substitute for a word, e.g. thumbs up
- Illustrator- Accent/compliment a word, e.g. point
- Affect display- communicates emotion, e.g. head in hands
- Regulator- control flow/interaction, e.g. holding up a hand to stop
- Adaptor- adapts to environment
What are the 6 main emotion categories?
Surprise, fear, anger, disgust, sad, and happy.
What is immediacy?
Communication liking, move towards/away.
What is arousal?
Communication responsiveness. So a person that acts dull or passive is perceived as uninterested.
What is dominance?
Communicates power. Status/position/importance.
What is the process to check your perceptions?
Observe non-verbal behaviour, form mental impression of what you think they mean, and ask whether perception is accurate.
