What is perception?
It is the experience of your world and making sense of what you experience.
What are the 3 stages of perception and the parts that come with it?
- Selective= choose what we want to experience (selective perception), selective attention (tune in based on needs + wants), selective exposure (select what were exposed too), selective recall (choose what we remember).
- Organizing= we create categories (familiar pattern), link categories (punctuation), seek closure (fill missing info)
- Interpreting= assign meaning, try to make sense of what we hear/see
Impression formation theory?
Impressions made based on physical characteristics?/behaviour and what is told to us by others.
What impression theory is the pattern of assumption/qualities we attribute to people which allow us to understand them?
Implicit personality theory.
What is uncertainty reduction theory?
Reduce uncertainty in interactions by using perceptions to gain information about people.
What effect emphasizes what comes first like the 1st impressions?
Primacy effect.
What is the recency effect?
Emphasize what comes last like last impressions you want to leave on a good note.
What effect attributes positive qualities to a person because we like them?
Halo effect
What effect is when we attribute negative qualities to someone because we don’t like them?
Horn effect.
What is attribution theory?
Ascribe specific motives/behavior of others so we develop the most credible explanation.
What theory can be based on circumstance, stimulus, or the person?
Casual attribution theory.
What theory is interpretation based on our own reference point and we see the world different b/c we each view from a different position? it also involves power and privilege.
Standpoint theory.
What is the intercultural communication theory?
Interpret behaviour based on your cultural lens.
What are the barriers to accurate perceptions?
Stereotypes, ignoring info, overgeneralize, focus on the negatives, avoid responsibility, and blame assures others have control.
How can we improve our perception skills?
Self reflect, seek others perceptions of you, be aware of your own barriers, be mindful and ware of your actions, be aware of your cultural lens, and test your perceptions of others.
