What is self talk, communication within ones own mind that is positive or negative messages?
Intrapersonal communication.
What is self concept?
Developed through reflected appraisal of how others see us. Who I think I am filtered through your own perceptions. It’s a subjective description.
What is relational orientation?
Way of thinking that focuses beyond interpersonal aspect to intrapersonal aspect/context of health care situations. Entry level competencies for nurses-need to incorporate relational practice.
Self awareness?
Understand who you are. Clear perception of your personality including strengths and weakness.
What is self-reflexiveness?
Being both participant/observer of ourselves. Think about what we do when we do it.
Material/social/spiritual self?
Material- possessions, body, physical
Social- Different depending on context on interactions (friends, fam, work)
Spiritual- Essence of your feelings about yourself, values, standards
How do we develop our self concept?
By interactions with individuals, association with groups, self labels, and our personalities.
What is self fulfilling prophecy?
What people believe about themselves often comes true b/c they expect it to.
What is a story that impacts our self concept, self esteem, relationships, and communication style?
Narrative.
What are the aspects of a healthy self concept?
Congruence between real/ideal self, realistic life goals, high self esteem, satisfied with role performance, and sense of identity.
What is self esteem?
Your perception of skills/talents/abilities/appearance and how they’re viewed in society.
How can we improve our self esteem?
Practice positive self talk, avoid comparison, seek support.
What is the cognitive process which you take into account others thoughts, feelings, and values. Must first be centered yourself.
Social decentering.
What is self disclosure?
Provide info to others that they wouldn’t learn if you didn’t tell them. Conveys your level of trust and acceptance of the other person.
Parts of the medicine wheel?
Mental, Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual. All related to one another and affects the student.
