What is a worldview?
A worldview is a collection of attitudes, values, stories and expectations about the world around us, which inform our every thought and action.
5 Sources of Power
Reward: Person with reward power has influence over distribution of incentive
coercive: threats and punishment
referent: Derived from interpersonal relationships, respected by others
expert: Gain power from having knowledge on a certain topic
legitimate: have a legitimate position of power
What is cultural humility?
Cultural humility involves humbly acknowledging oneself as a learner when it comes to understanding another’s experience.
What is cultural safety?
An outcome that is based on respectful engagement that recognizes and strives to address power imbalances inherent in the healthcare system
What is cultural competence?
Ability to interact effectively with people of various racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, religious,and social groups
Working toward cultural competence is an ongoing process
What is diversity?
Having or being composed of diverse elements
What is culture?
Shared set of values, beliefs, and norms for a specific group
Indigenous vs. Western Worldviews
Indigenous: collectiveness, wealth is shared, natural world is more important, land is sacred, silence is valued, generosity
Western: individualism, accumulate wealth, laws of humans most important, nature is human’s control, silence needs to be filled
Common ground: empirical observation in natural settings, open-mindedness, perserverence, universe is unified
What is diversity intelligence?
the capability of individuals to recognize the value of workplace diversity and to use this information to guide thinking and behaviour
Leaders create a sense of belongingness and uniqueness
What is othering?
A process of racialization used for domination
