What is advocacy?
Act or process of supporting a cause or proposal; important in nursing to advocate WITH the people you are advocating for
How are advocacy and ethics related?
Advocacy is used as a tool to address inequalities in the healthcare system related to health and wellbeing.
What is paternalism?
intentional overriding of one’s preferences/actions by another person, where that person justifies the action with the goal of benefiting or avoiding harm to the person whose will is over written
“i am the expert and I know best”
What is personal power?
Based on one’s reputation and ability
What is expert power?
Power needed by others (referring to the possession of skills and knowledge)
What is position power?
Result of your position in an organization/group
What is perceived power?
Status as a powerful person
What is connection power?
Association with/links to powerful people
What does it mean to “empower”?
to give official authority or legal power to (or) to promote self-actualization of influence
What is empowerment?
Enhancing feelings of self-efficacy among organizational members by identifying and removing conditions that foster powerlessness
What is structural empowerment and its four dimensions?
Sharing of power and the eventual transference of decision-making power down the hierarchy
4 dimensions: opportunities, information, resources, support
What is psychological empowerment and it’s four components?
Individual perceptions of power

What is whistleblowing?
“A conscious act of disclosure about organizational or individual practices and behaviours to those who could achieve possible change.”
What is activism?
practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or in opposition to one side of a controversial issue
