Week 3.6 Flashcards

1
Q

Worldview profiling scenarios (2)

A

1) Do these [7] factors predict how people respond to [these] scenarios
2) For each factor, is there a logical explanation regarding each scenario

(Able to predict how they make a call on these three scenarios - and are they consistent)

Q

Example of a study on profiling worldview scenarios

A

For example, What would you predict a person scoring high [versus low] on Factor 1:Religiosity?
Scenario 1 Children
Scenario 2 Workers
Scenario 3 Prisoners

Q

Scenario 1 and Religiosity - Children are born…

A

People with strong religious beliefs strongly endorsed
that children are inherently bad

Religious - more likely to say that children are inherently bad (need to be punished), and less likely to tick inherently good and even less likely than that to have active role

Scenario 2 and Religiosity - Modern day workers are…

A

People with strong religious beliefs most likely to say workers are inherently lazy, then less likely that are industrious and creative, then even less likely for responsive to good management

Scenario 3 and Religiosity - To reduce crime and the number of prisoners in jails, society needs to…

A

People with strong religious beliefs most likely to say increase penalties, then less likely to say change societal values, then even less likely to say rehabilitate prisoners

Q

Prediction of religiosity and worldview of fundamental human nature

A

Prediction = People who scored high on religiosity tended to focus on the negative side of human nature. That is:

  • Children are born inherently evil/bad
  • Workers are inherently lazy
  • Prisoners should receive harsher penalties

Q

Explanation of religiosity and worldview of fundamental human nature

Q

Scenario 3 by 7 factors

A

Prisoners should receive:

  • Increased penalties
  • Change society
  • rehabilitate

1) Religiosity
2) Naturalism
3) Integrated worldview
4) Individualism
5) Gestalt formation
6) Scientism
7) Developing self

(Final response will be a combination of those attitudes)

Q

Explanation of results for Factor 1 religiosity Scenario 3

A

Traditional [established] religions have primarily explained the suffering of individuals on the will of God. Hence, it would predict that people who score high on “Religiosity” would strongly endorse the law and order notion of increasing penalties against those who have broken the law [sinned]. Changing society and rehabilitating prisoners does not fit this view and thus these strategies are not strongly endorsed

Q

Results for Scenario 3 on Factor 2 Naturalism

A
  • High on naturalism = score low on penalties

- Responded equally to changing society and changing prisoners (rehabilitating) (higher than penalties)

Q

Explanation of results for Factor 2 Naturalism Scenario 3

A

People who score high on this factor are focusing on a fundamental connectedness between the individual and the social [human] environment in which they live. Hence, strongly endorsing changing the society [which in turn will indirectly change the individual] and changing [rehabilitate] prisoners to strengthen their connection with society [develop skills to get jobs, money, home, family, etc]. If people are part of the environment, can change the environment or change the person
