Stakeholder definition
A stakeholder is any party that has an interest in a program and can either affect or be affected by that program
The primary stakeholders in a typical University degree course will be:
1) Students
2) Staff
3) Heads of Discipline and School
Types of stakeholders
Internal; External
Example of internal stakeholders
Students who invest (time, money, effort) into the program’s courses but also influence how each course runs/develops/evolves which then influences the success of students as they graduate
Example of external stakeholders
Include employers of three and four year psychology graduates; While they do not have a direct relationship, the University is influenced by this input to ensure higher rates of graduate employment
The problem (graduate employment)
Since 2008, there has been a steady decline in graduate employment (as measured four months after graduation)
(see graph)
Problems with stakeholders
All stakeholders operate for their own self-interest and the various self-interests may not always align and therefore will be conflict (and compromise)
Examples of conflict: (2)
1) Universities try to offer courses as economically as possible (fewest resources) but students want to gain as much as possible from each course (which means spending more of these resources)
2) Students want to get high marks for all courses to ensure they get into honours (or obtain employment), but Universities try to maintain standards (an appropriate failure rate) to ensure the program maintains a high reputation (to attract students with high ATARs)
