Week 2- Integration of Tissues Flashcards
Organ
A structure that is composed of 2 or more tissue types that work together to perform specific, complex functions
Body membranes
-formed from an epithelial layer that is bond to an underlying connective tissue
-line body cavities or joint surface, cover viscera, or cover body’s external surface
4 Types of Body Membranes
1) Mucous
2) Serous
3) Cutaneous
4) Synovial
Mucous membrane
-lines passageways and compartments that eventually open to external environment
-digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive tracts
-formed by an epithelium and an underlying connective tissue called lamina propria
-perform absorptive, protective, or secretory functions or a combination of these
Serous membrane
-line body cavities that typically do not open to external environment and covers external surface of may organs
-composed of simple squamous epithelium called mesothelium
-parietal layer: lines inside of body cavity
-visceral layer: covers surface of internal organs
Cutaneous membrane
-largest body membrane
-skin
-composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium (epidermis) and an underlying layer of connective tissue (dermis)
-functions include protecting internal organs and preventing water loss
Synovial membrane
-specialized connective tissue that lines some joints in the body
-cells within membrane secrete synovial fluid that reduce friction among moving bone parts and distributes nutrients to cartilage on articular surfaces of bone
