Week 2 Beta Blockers Flashcards
Beta Blockers end in ___
-olol
What are four common Beta Blockers?
- Metropolol
- Atenolol
- Propranolol
- Labetolol
What is the MOA of Beta Blockers?
Selectivly inhibits Beta receptors (primarily Beta 1 receptors in the heart) Thus inhibiting the sympathetic NS effects on the heart.
What are the effects of the sympathetic nervous system on the heart?
- Increased HR
- Increased BP
- Increased myocardium contractility and O2 demand
What are the therapeutic effects of beta-blockers?
- Decreased HR
- Decreased BP
- Decreased Contractility and O2 demand
Why should Beta Blockers be used with caution in patients with a history of HF?
They have an excessive activation of the SNS which will worsen CHF overtime.
Beta Blockers are often used with ___ to treat CHF
ACE inhibitors
What are the main indications for Beta Blockers?
HF, HTN, acute MI, CAD, ventricular dysrhythmias
What are the most common side effects of Beta Blockers?
Bradycardia, hypotension, fatigue, weakness
What are the major nursing considerations for a patient taking Beta Blockers?
- Obtain HR and BP prior to administering. Hold if apical HR is less than 60 or SBP is less than 90
- Change position slowly to avoid orthostatic changes
When are Beta Blockers contraindicated?
- Worsening HF
- Bradycardia
- Heart Block
When should Beta Blockers be used with caution?
Diabetes and liver disease
