Week 2 Antihyperlipidemics Flashcards
What is the main goal of antihyperlipidemic medications?
To reduce high blood lipid levels while supporting good lipids
What are the 5 main antihyperlipidemic medication classes?
- Bile sequestrants
- Fibrates (fibric acid)
- Nicotinic acid
- Cholesterol absorption inhibitors
- Hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (Statins)
What are the three main Bile sequestrants?
Contain “coles/choles”
- cholestyramine
- colestipol
- colesevelam
What is the MOA of bile sequestrants?
Bind with bile acids in the intestines
What is the main Fibrate medication?
contains fibro
gemfibrozil
What is a major contraindication of fibrate medications?
Do not take while on anticoagulants
What are the main nicotinic acid medications
niacin
vitamin b2
What is the reason nicotinic acids are not well tolerated?
they require large doses. Only 20% of patients can handle them
What is the main cholesterol absorption inhibitor?
ezetimibe
All HMG-CoA medications end in what suffix?
-statin
What are the 5 main statin medications?
- fluvastatin
- pravastatin
- rosuvastatin
- simvastatin
- vatorstatin
What are the two main lab tests while taking statins?
Homocysteine and High sensitivity C-reactive protein
What are the normal levels for homocysteine?
4-17 mmol/L fasting
What is the reference value for hsCRP?
less than 0.175 mg/ml
- low risk less than 1mg/L
- Mod risk 1-3mg/L
- High risk greater than 3mg/L
What does hsCRP detect?
inflammatory process d/t buildup of atherosclerotic plaque in the arterial system. Especially coronary arteries
