Week 2 Flashcards
what does the hypothalamus do
Activates FL/Fi/Fr through the sympathetic NS
What does the thalamus do
Relays motor and sensory signals through the motor cortex and amygdala
What does the amygdala do
Processes emotional information, particularly fear
What does the hippocampus do
Integral for the relationship between emotional experience and cognition
What are the 3 functions of the para/sympathetic NS in terms of emotion?
Para
- releases acetylcholine
- initiates protection and activity growth
- ‘rest and digest’ response
Symp
- releases norepinephrine
- prepares body for activity
- Fi/FL/Fr response
What are the types of facial expressions? And what hemisphere is involved in what type of emotional experience?
Pyramidal: voluntary expressions
Extra-pyramidal: involuntary
Positive = left Negitive = right
What are the 4 theories of emotion in order by year it was proposed?
- James-Lange (1890): result in interpretation of peripheral processes.
Stimulai -> physical response -> emotion - Cannon-Bard (1927): emotions start in the CNS are consciously experienced simultaneously with the PNS.
Stimulus -> physical reaction and emotion - Schater-Singer (1967): emotions are attributions we apply to undifferentiated ANS arousal.
Stimulus -> physical and cognitive attribution -> emotion - Lazarus cognitive appraisal theory (Excitation transfer) (1983/1996): residual physiological arousal from one situation can enhance emotion in an independent situation.
Stimulus -> appraisal -> emotion and physical response.
What are the 6 main emotions?
Anger Sadness Surprise Happiness Disgust Fear
Types of emotional intelligence?
- linguistic
- logical-mathematical
- bodily kinaesthetic
- interpersonal
- spacial
- naturalist
- musical
Types of emotional regulation
Interpersonal: attempt to make someone feel a certain way
Intrapersonal: ability to control ones own emotions and behaviour
