What are primary skin lesions?
Skin changes produced directly by a disease process, such as vesicles or pustules.
What are secondary skin lesions?
Changes that develop from primary lesions, such as scales and scars.
Give an example of a primary lesion.
A mosquito bite (wheal).
What is a pustule?
A small elevation of the skin filled with pus, often surrounded by redness, like a pimple.
What is melanoderma?
Hyperpigmentation caused by increased melanocyte activity, seen in conditions like chloasma.
What is leukoderma?
Hypopigmentation due to a decrease in melanocytes, seen in conditions like albinism and vitiligo.
Define “nevus.”
A birthmark or congenital mole.
What are comedones?
Blackheads caused by sebum trapped in the hair follicle.
What is acne?
A chronic inflammatory disorder of the sebaceous glands, appearing as acne simplex or acne vulgaris.
What is a furuncle?
A boil caused by acute infection in the hair follicle, often from staphylococcal bacteria.
What is hyperhidrosis?
Excessive sweating due to heat or body weakness.
Define “miliaria rubra.”
A condition with small red vesicles caused by excessive heat, also known as heat rash.
What is melanoma?
The most deadly form of skin cancer, which can spread if untreated.
Describe basal cell carcinoma.
The most common but least dangerous skin cancer, usually appearing as a red or pearly lump.
What is the ABCDE rule for detecting melanoma?
Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter >6mm, and Evolving shape or size.
