What is Awe? (there are 2 parts with 2 subsets each)

A

It is a complex emotion comprised of:

1) Perceived vastness
a) Observing something literally physically large
b) Theoretical perception of vastness (Being with a prestigious person or idea)

2) Need for Accommodation
a. this awe violates our normal understanding of the world
b. so we try to change our normal structures to try and understand (mental structures)

What are the 2 differences between awe & other positive emotions?

A

1) The facial expression - very different from other pos. emotions - not a smile but widened eyes, raised inner eye brows, and relaxed, open mouth
(lack of smile shows that it is not about social affiliation)

2) Visceral effects: Most positive emotions move us towards something but awe reduces sympathetic effect on heart and keeps us STILL
-sense of uncertainty - want to solve it - careful, detailed processing of information, careful, critical thought
- appeal to our need to know - great works of art, human ability, nature

-they are better in the long run - cerate a more collaborative environment, know their strengths and weaknesses (have a balanced view), very open to new ideas and feedback, good at channeling energy towards greater good, focus on strengths of others

A

1) Views self ACCURATELY (not too high or low; not self-deprecating) - WISDOM is needed to find the balance - WISDOM FEEDS INTO HUMILITY
2)Considers the other NOT JUST the self (the self is not taken out)
3)Is teachable (open to the possibility that they are wrong and that they have more to learn)

2)Vigilant to possibility that could be wrong/incorrect (curiosity)
3) Consider perspectives of other people
4) Revise their view when evidence warrants it

A

-interpersonal qualities like respect & empathy

-does not love self-loathing/deprecation
-using in conflict
-openness to different cultures and worldviews (curiosity)
-modesty in social interactions
-getting ourselves out of the line of vision
