what are 2 reasons why pos psyc needs the church?
1 - to temper an excessive focus on self
2- the church serves as a custodian of truth
what are 2 reasons why the church needs pos psyc?
1-it is time for the church and pos psyc to become better friends
2-pos psyc makes Christian thought practical
(ex - gives practical “how tos” for forgiveness)
How are positive and negative emotions connected/which is easier to study?
-they are not polar opposites
-they do different things
-both are needed
-negative emotions are easier to study because they have specific markers like fight/flight

what is another name for negative emotions and what are some purposes of negative emotions?
1-they identify, isolate, and combat irritants
2-they are associated with specific urges to act (fear motivates us to protect ourselves)
They are also called FIREFIGHTING EMOTIONS
(think of being motivated to put out flames and of nick’s firefighter)
What do positive emotions do?
*They broaden our awareness and build psychological resources for later.
-better relationships etc.
-the resources built are more enduring than the positive emotions themselves
-but pos emotions do not seem to have the same link to an urge to act
Who produced well-being theory?
Martin Seligman
Who is Martin Seligman/what did he do?
-father of pos psyc
-the authentic happiness theory (pos emotion, engagement, and later added meaning)
-later said that authentic happiness theory was too mood loaded/bound
-then developed well-being theory
What is the goal of well-being in relation to negative emotions?
-well-being is not just about feeling good (don’t want to eradicate negative emotions - want to learn to employ them well)
Are positive and negative emotions dependent on each other?
-pos and neg emotions are quite independent from each other - very relevant to pos psyc interventions
