what does radiopaque mean
x rays + CT: tissues will appear brighter on the film and are considered to be radiopaque
what does radiolucent mean
x rays + CT: structures with lower density (e.g. air) will absorb less amount of X-rays. As a result, these will appear darker on the film and are considered to be radiolucent
what does semi radiopaque mean
x rays + CT:Structures of median density (e.g. fat, internal organs, liquid) will absorb varying degrees of X-rays. These are considered semi radiopaque
hyperintense meaning
MRI: brighter than the thing we are comparing it to
isointense meaning
MRI: same brightness as the thing we are comparing it to
hypointense meaning
MRI: darker than the thing we are comparing it to
hyperechogenic meaning
US: whiter appearance on a sonogram and is considered to be hyperechogenic compared to darker structures
hypoechogenic meaning
US: less dense structures (e.g. any type of fluid) will absorb the sound waves, which results in a darker appearance on the sonogram
warmer colours on nuclear image means
higher metabolic activity
cooler colours on nuclear images means
lower metabolic activity
