Define cosciousness
Need to be awake and aware
Awake- open eyes, motor arousal, different levels of consciousness
Aware- Experience thoughts, memories and emotions
Function of Forebrain
Motor control somatosensory processing emotion thoughts planning memory
Function of brainstem
Homesostasis
life-sustaining function
cranial nerve nuclei
Function of cerebellum
Coordination of movements that use more than one joint (running)
Spinal Cord
Propioreception
spinal reflexes
sympathetic nervous system (move stuff from periphery to brain and back like a two lane highway)
Anatomic lesion of a coma?
Damage to
- both cerebral hemispheres
- Brain stem or thalamus
Anatomic lesion for vegetative state?
Damage to cortex or thalamus
-INTACT brainstem
Anatomic lesion of lock-in syndrome?
Lesion on bilateral ventral pons
Cause of minimally conscious state?
Drug
Alcohol
Trauma
Define coma
Not awake
Not aware
No motor function- may have some spinal reflexes
Define vegetative state
Awake
NOT aware
May smile, grimace, or reflexively grip hand
No visual but can open eyes
Define locked in syndrome
Awake Aware- normal, intact No motor function = quadriplegia, can't talk Sensory loss Can hear, see, and have emotions
