Week 1 Brain Vasculature- Severson Flashcards
Which vessels are prone to thrombus?
PICA
AICA
Which vessels are prone to embolus?
Superior cerebellar artery
Posterior cerebral artery
Clot in anterior cerebral arteries?
Supplies motor and sensory cortex
-Contralateral paralysis of LOWER LIMBS
Clot in middle cerebral arteries?
Supplies motor and sensory cortex
-Contralateral paralysis of UPPER LIMBS and FACE
Clot in posterior cerebral arteries?
- Posterior occipital
- Stroke and vision loss
- Calcarine artery
What does the basilar artery supply?
Pons, Medulla, lower midbrain
-can cause LOCKED IN SYNDROME
Clot in PICA?
- Supplies Lateral medulla
- Lateral Medullary syndrome
- Neuro symptoms (numbness) in opposite body same side of face
When would use a CT?
- ER, ICU (quick)
- Best screen for intracranial hemorrhage or complications related to mass effect
When would use a MRI?
- Acute ischemia (stroke but it is time sensitive so usually use CT)
- Demyelinating disease
- Seizure foci or tumors
What would you do to visualize the blood brain barrier?
Use contrast!
Should you use contrast when getting an acute trauma CT?
NO!!! It may mask acute hemorrhage
