What is affect?
Generic broad valenced feelings that ma encompass mood/emotion
What is mood?
Diffuse, prolonged, low intensity feelings not always linked to specific event
What is emotion?
Specific, short lasting, high intensity feelings, derived from appraisal of a specific event.
What is the profile of mood states?
Used to measure mood Questionnaire where you rate adjectives based on how you feel; - tension - anger - fatigue - depression - confusion - vigour
What is an iceberg profile?
Runners have lower scores for negative mood states but much higher scores for positive (vigour) than an average person.
What is the hedonic principle?
Humans seek pleasure and avoid displeasure
What are feel good factors?
Social interaction Pleasant environment Listening to music Feeling of mastery/success Distraction from problems Relief that it's over
What effect on mood would you expect from an easy treadmill walk?
Slight elevation
What effect on mood would you expect from a maximum treadmill walk?
Initial increase, then as test gets harder mood plummets, then once it’s over significant increase in mood (affective rebound)
What is the PRETIE-Q?
Preference for and tolerance of the intensity of exercise questionnaire
Used to measure differences in people’s preferences and tolerances to intensity levels to work out what is best for each individual to ensure a positive experience.
What are the defining features of depression?
Low mood and loss of interest in activities
What are possible additional symptoms of depression?
Weight/appetite changes Sleep changes Fatigue Psychomotor changes Feeling worthless/guilty Concentration problems Suicidal thoughts
What is required for clinical diagnosis of depression?
5 or more symptoms, including at least 1 defining feature, for two weeks near daily, causing impaired function.
What is the SMILE study and what are the results?
202 adults with depression not on current treatment
Randomly allocated to 4 groups for 4 months
- group exercise (45 mins 3/w) - 45% remission
- home exercise (45 mins 3/w) - 40% remission
- antidepressant meds - 47% remission
- placebo meds - 31% remission
What is the DOSE study?
80 depressed adults
Randomised to 5 groups
- guideline vol 3d/w or 5d/w - 43% remission
- low vol 3d/w or 5d/w - 25% remission
- control stretch 3d/w - 11% remission
Difference in frequency (3 or 5 not statistically different)
