Reading Week 4 Flashcards
Brand, S - what was the objective of the study?
To assess the association between self perceived exercise exertion before bed time and objectively measured sleep.
Brand, S - summarise the methods
52 regularly exercising young adults (mean age 19.70, 54% female) underwent sleep electroencephalographic recordings 1.5hr after completing MVPA in the evening.
Before sleeping, answered questions regarding degree of exertion of the exercise undertaken.
Brand, S - summarise the results
Greater self perceived exertion before bed time associated with higher objectively measured sleep efficiency (p<0.001)
Self perceived exertion explained 48% of the variance in sleep efficiency
High self perceived exercise exertion associated with more deep sleep, shortened sleep onset time, increased deep sleep, decreased light sleep, fewer awakenings after sleep onset, and shorted wake r sleep onset.
Brand, S - what was the conclusion?
Against expectations and general sleep hygiene recommendations, high self perceived exertion before bedtime was associated with better sleep patterns in a sample of healthy young adults.
Brand, S - what should future research include?
Should also focus on elderly adults and adults suffering from insomnia.
