Reading Week 6 Flashcards
Szabo, A - what were the objectives of the study?
To compare the prevalence of self reported symptoms of exercise addiction in sports science students with those of the general exercising population using the exercise addiction inventory.
Szabo, A - what was speculated prior to the study?
That both the physical and mental involvement with sport and exercise, for the majority of time with sport science students, might translate into greater risk of exercise addiction in comparison to the German exercising public.
Szabo, A - summarise the method
A total of 455 male and gamble participants completed the exercise addiction inventory (261 sport science students, 194 gym users)
Szabo, A - summarise the results
Sport science students scored higher on the exercise addiction inventory (mean 18.6) than exercisers from the general population (mean 17.1) (p<0.001)
6.9% sport science students were possibly addicted to exercise compared to only 3.6% of general exercising population (but p<0.9)
Szabo, A - summarise the conclusions
Prevalence if exercise addiction almost twice as high in sport students than general exercisers
Sport students had higher average exercise addiction scores
No obvious reason for the difference other than that sport science students are more likely to have a greater daily personal, social, theoretical, and practical involvement with sport and exercise.
Also raises possibility that sport students may be more susceptible to exercise than exercisers more generally.
