What are the 3 types of clouds

A

Cirus: streaky, brushed across sky, crystals of ice

A

Convectional: evaporation and precipitation cycle
Relief: warm air cools at high land, rains

Vegetation?
Effect on population
A
  • Latitude 60-70C North. Upper part of Russia, Canada, Alaska, Greenland
  • 10 inches per year, dry weather, top soil=dry (permafrost)
  • Vegetation is barren, only shrubs, plants, perennial
  • Wild life: polar bears, snow geese, most migrate and lay eggs
  • Population: global warming will melt permafrost

Precipitation?

Vegetation?
Effect on population
A
  • 15-30C North + South
  • 100mm of rain per year (trade winds absorb moisture, cool ocean currents loose moisture)
  • Very hot summers, 45C, close to equator
  • Vegetation has shortage of water, store water from underground, barren (humans cannot benefit), shortage of food
  • Growing population but shortages of water

Q

Effects on climate

A

Latitude:distance from the equator / further away from equator = colder - no direct sun rays and less hours of sunlight
Altitude: height above sea level / higher up = colder - decrease 1 degree for every 150m
Prevailing winds: winds blow most frequently over an area. Affect the climates of the places they blow - northerly are cooler, southerly winds warmer

Q

How a wind bane and annemeter works

A

Wind vane: direction of wind. spinning and pointing direction of the way wind is blowing
Annemeter: Speed of wind - arms attached to vertical rod. cups rotate as the wind blows and the amount of times it rotates is recorded

Q

Cyclonic rain

A
  • caused by cyclonic activity
  • occurs along the fronts of the cyclone
  • formed when two masses of air of different temperature, humidity and density meets.
eg. meeting of moisture in warm tropical wind with a polar air mass.
  • layer separating them is called the front.

Q

Conventional rain

A
  • sun heats the ground and warm air rises.
  • As the air rises it cools and water vapour condenses to form clouds. When the condensation point is reached, clouds are formed.
  • Heavy rain storms occur.

Q

Relief rain

A
  • occurs along coastal areas where a line of hills runs along the coast.
  • wet onshore wind from the sea meets a mountain or any Barrier, it is forced to rise along the slope and cools.
  • When the air temperature falls, water vapour condenses to form clouds.
