//Population Flashcards
What is demography?
And the population explosion?
- The study of population
- Rapid growth of population in 20th century
The demographic Transition Model
5 stages
- High fluctuating stage
- Early expanding stage
- Late expanding stage
- Low fluctuating stage
- Senile stage
What’s the high fluctuating stage?
High birth and death rates, population fluctuates
What’s the early expanding stage?
Death rate falls with better medicine, population grows
What’s the late expanding stage?
Population growth slows as birth rate falls
What’s the low fluctuating stage?
Low birth and death rate in economically developed countries
What’s the senile stage?
People have few children, although they live long lives, birth rate could become lower than death rate
How does food supply influence population?
When food supply decreases eg. Famine, population declines
When food supply increases the birth rate increases and death rate decreases
How does war influence population?
War causes disruption to farming, water, health etc
soldiers and civilians die, increasing death rate
families are separated, lowering birth rates
How does education influence population?
Contraceptives reduce birth rate, people need information to access this information
The more educated a women is the more likely it is the she will work outside the home and wanting less children
Population pyramid of developing country look like? Eg. Brazil
Population of developed country eg. Germany
Developing country
- high birth rate= broad base
- young structure
- high death rate= narrow peak
Developed country
- Low birth rate = narrow base
- most population is in the middle upper part
- low death rate= broader peak
High population density vs Low population density
people living per square km
High population density
- overcrowding
- lack of open space
- shortage of clean water
- pollution
Low Population Density:
- low marriage rates
- Abandonment of farm land
- political and economic isolation
