//Rocks Flashcards
1
Q
Rock types
A
Igneous - granite, basalt (volcanic material cooled)
Sedimentary - limestone, sandstone (compressed remains)
Metamorphic - marble, quartzite (changed by great heat/pressure)
2
Q
Basalt
A
- lava spread out and cooled very quickly
- solidified and very small crystals formed
- Heavy, black rock
- Giants Causeway, Co. Aontroim
3
Q
Granite
A
- Lava spread and cooled very slowly
- large crystals to form
- hard, multi-coloured rock
- Wicklow Lountains
4
Q
Limestone
A
- Skeletons of tiny sea creatures and shells pile over millions of years on the sea beds of shallow seas
- particles are compressed together
- layers of strata
- permeable, easily weathered
- used: manufacturers (cement), buildings (GPO), Farming (soil conditioner)
- Burren, Co. Clare
5
Q
Marble
A
- When magma forces its way into limestone it puts it under great heat and pressure causing it to change colour
- hard, cystalline rock
- used: fireplaces, headstones
- can be different colours eg. green conamara
