//Mass Movemebt Flashcards
1
Q
What allows mass movement to happen
A
- Steep Slopes
- Heavy rainfall =wet regolith
- vegetation (roots bind soil)
2
Q
Soil creep
A
-Downslope movement of soil under the influence of gravity
Results: poles, fences tilt, road cracks, bent trees
Effects: free-thaw, deforestation, human interference, animals
-Gentle slop/slow
3
Q
Mudflows and Bogbursts
A
- Bogbursts: If rainwater cannot drain/soak, peat can be heavy/ saturated
- Mudflows: Saturated regolith rapidly flows down slopes
- Gentle slope/slow-rapid
4
Q
Landslide
A
-Landslide: anything that undercuts base of slope,
Effects: sea erosion, road building, quarrying
Very steep slope/very rapid
5
Q
Influences of mass movement
A
Precipitation: water makes regolith heavier, letting it move easily and quickly down the slope
Gradient: steeper the slope, mass movement will occur more often
