//Urbanisation and Land Settlement Flashcards
Give an example of an Urban developing city
-Dublin
-Vikings: port and trading centre
-Normans: developed wall, grew economically + trade with England
-Georgian 1700s: old walls demolished, broad streets+squares, houses, manufacturing + canals
-1800s= act of union=no social life, slum landlords
1900s+: economic-tourism, transport, admin-dáil, capital city, social
2 Problems of urban growth
- Urban sprawl: rapid growth in the countryside, uses up farmland, villages swallowed up, soulless suburbs
- Urban decline: poor housing+appearance, congestion, unemployment
What is urban renewal and give an example
Redevelopment in an area in a town/city
Eg. Fatima mansions
Old: unemployment, poor school attendance, drugs
New: private owned shops and services, less crime and more employment
Traffic and 2 solutions
Traffic can be congested in urban areas during rush hour for commuters
- Public transport eg. Luas
- Restrictions eg. Yellow box, traffic lights
What are functional zones?
CBD
all businesses and shops are located here, smaller shopping areas now part of the city, individual shopping centre, industrial area eg. Docks, residential areas
River Rhine Case Study
- Market function: business, trade, shopping
- Port function: one of Europe’s busiest river points, manufacturing industries
- Recreational: historical gothic city, river cruises
Urban sprawl and 2 problems
Eg. Tallaght
- rapid growth, planned, connected to city, industrial estates
1. Uses up farmland
2. Soulless suburbs
City housing (suburbs)
New houses are in suburbs
Inner city: apartments and terraced houses
High population city
- Kolkata
- overcrowding: 16m people (100,000km2), pollution
- inadequate services: no clean water- 40 families, 1 tap, poor public transport, bustee poor schools
Norman Towns
12th century eg Trim, Kilkenny, eastern/soutern coasts, castles=defense, rivers, fertile lands, low-lying areas, market towns
River Rhine Basin
use same functions for Limerick
Koln- Germany
- Market function: banking, shopping, fertile lands from river, nodal point, bridging point
- Port function: Europe’s busiest river points, transshipment, manufacturing industries
- Recreational:historic gothic city, river cruises, pedestrianised areas for tourists
Netherlands polders
Reclaim land from the sea and control floods in low-lying land
Below sea level- sea, river or lake is drained on low-lying land
Fertile soil- benefits agriculture as land has been reclaimed from water that eroded minerals from rocks
New Town
Tallaght
Industrial Estates- factories and business set up - labour supply, no space in inner-city
Residential area- planned housing as a result of urban sprawl
