//Secondary Economic Activities Flashcards
Intel plant
Leixip, co. Kildare
Inputs, processes, outputs
Inputs//
- Silicon wafers: flat circular discs of silicon made from sand
- Equipment: the clean room have some of the worlds most advances equipment
- Workers: 4,500 scientists, engineers
Processes//
- Bond pads: enable microprocessors to communicate electronically
- Testing: microprocessors are tested before exported to usa and china
Outputs//
- Steam: released into atmosphere
- Silicon wafers: completed with microprocessors
Cement factory
Drogheda co. Louth
Inputs, processes, outputs
Inputs//
- Raw materials: limestone with some parts of iron ore
- Fossil fuels: large quantities are burned
Processes//
- Crushing: the exploded rock into tennis ball size chunks
- Blending: chunks for raw meal
- Melting: hot rotting tube at 2000C melts raw meal and forms clinger
Outputs//
- Completed: cement
- Waste: gases
Location of an industry and example
- Transport eg. close to rail, road - commuters, goods imported
- Resource materials eg. close to airport for imported materials(light industries) quarry, mines (heavy industries)
- Labour supply eg. Near a town or university after courses
Two types of industries
Heaving industry eg. Cement factory
-bulky raw materials, heavy outputs/ products
Light industry eg. Intel
-little raw materials, light outputs/products
What are footloose industries?
Industries that are not tied to one place
They need: good roads for commuters, electricity
What is Industrial inertia
When industries stay in a place even though it makes send to move
Reasons: quality produce, skilled workers
Women in industries- Ireland
Changes and wages
Changes: 56% women in paid employment
- 60% professional workers are women
Wages: increased steadily (94% men)
Most women have ‘female jobs’ but 1/3 women in management
China women in industies
Causes and new policies
Communism: 1949 women encouraged to work, discrimination was illegal
Children: couples only had 1 child allowing women to work
New policies: special eco ice zone SEZ but owners ignored laws, women had long hours, small wages
Industrialized regions
Economically developed in global north eg. America, Ireland
1. Skilled Labour 2. Lots of capital
Newly industrialized region
Rapid growth of industries eg. India, Brazil
1. Skilled Labour but cheaper
Industrially emergent region
Located in global south, least developed counties, little industries eg. Etheopia, Uganda
1. Colonized and prevented industrial growth 2. Production of raw materials
Effects and reducing of acid rain
-Human health- acid fog affects asthma eg. Sweden caused outbreak of diarrhea and green hair
-Tourism- buildings are chemically weathered eg. Colosseum in Rome, last 20 years caused as much damage as the last 2000 years
Reducing: buring fossil fuels, renewable energy
Water cycle
Evaporation = suns heat turns sea water into water vapour
Condensation = water vapour cools to tiny droplets, forming clouds
Precipitation = further cooling leadings to rain, snow, sleet etc
Run off/soakage = water returns to sea but some is evaporated immediately
