Q

What is the green house effect?

A
  • Sun produces short wave energy that paces through the atmosphere and reaches the earth
  • Earth surface returns long wave energy but finds it hard to get the CO2 back, so some of it stays

Q

How does air move and what is the global air movements ?

A

Global air movement: unequal heating of the atmosphere due to latitude
Air moving: hot air goes down//cold goes around and up
Air pressure: high pressure goes up on the inside//low pressure goes down

Q

What is atmospheric pressure?

A
-pressure within crust of earth
Equator: low pressure
30 degrees: cold+ heavy = high pressure
60 degrees: warm air from south+cool air from north= low pressure
Poles: cool, heavy air= high pressure

Q

What are the causes of ocean currents?

What are the effects of warm and cool ocean currents?

A

Causes: rotation of earth, connection currents (equal heating), prevailing winds
Effects of warm: raises water (+8C Ireland) and air temperature on land, coasts are ice-free
Effects of cold: lowers water and air temperature, increases likelihood of ice

Q

What is accessing and descending air ?

A
Acceding air (low pressure) : strong winds blow to centre, more clouds, precipitation
Descending air(high pressure) : little/no winds blow away from centre, no clouds, dry weather
