Weather Flashcards
What is weather
It is the state of the atmosphere at any given time
What are weather stations
A weather station is a facility that uses equipment and instruments to measure and observe the weather
How is weather data Gathering collected
Weather satellites orbit the Earth scanning atmosphere gathering data and forming images.
The data gathered is measured and Read by met eireann, to create weather maps and predict the weather.
It is then broadcast on TV radio and published in newspapers and online.
What data is gathered
Atmospheric pressure temperature precipitation wind direction and speed humidity and sunshine
What is atmospheric pressure
Is the weight of atmosphere pushing down on the earth. It is measured in millibars by a barometer
How was atmospheric pressure shown on a weather map
Lines called isobars display atmospheric pressure. H is used to show high atmospheric pressure and L is used to show low atmospheric pressure
What does low atmospheric pressure cause in weather
Wind will be quite strong cloud will be covering the sky and precipitation will be high
What does high precipitation cause on a weather map
The wind will be light will be little or none of cloud and precipitation will be little and the day will be dry
What is temperature and what is it measured in
It is measured in degrees Celsius
A thermometer measures it
There are different types of thermometers to measure the weather (maximum and minimum thermometer)
How is temperature displayed on a weather map
The average (mean) temperature is displayed in the form of a number
What measures precipitation
A rain gauge measures precipitation in millimeters
Rainfall on a weather map
It is displayed with different shades of blue
Lighter shades= less rainfall
Darker shades= more rainfall
What are clouds
They are groups of tiny water droplets or ice Crystal’s held in the atmosphere. The droplets are so small and light that they can float in the air
Types of clouds and their heights
Cirrus - above 8000m
Cumulus - below 5000m
Stratus - below 2000m
What is a climate graph
They are used to illustrate average temperature and average precipitation of an area over 12-months
