--------------Globalisation Flashcards
What changes have given rise to Globalisation?
Modern communication systems allow money and information to move almost instantly throughout the world.
Improved regional in international transport allows many people to travel widely and rapidly.
Goods and services that are produced in one part of the world can be available to purchase in another part of the world within hours.
What are the 3 types of globalisation?
Cultural/social globalisation, economic globalisation, political globalisation
What is globalisation?
The increasing social, economic and political interconnection of people and countries around the world.
What is cultural globalisation?
It is the ever-increasing movement of people and ideas has resulted in the spread throughout much of the world of some languages, religions, beliefs, attitudes, customs, entertainments and eating habits.
What are some examples of cultural globalisation?
The spread of the English language, McDonald’s, Twitter, American popular music.
What is economic globalisation?
The economies of most countries interconnecting with each other
What are some reasons for economic globalisation?
Import-export taxes and other trade barriers between countries have decreased.
International free-trade areas (e.g. The EU) allow the free movement of goods, services and citizens between their member states.
Multinational corporations (MNCs) control more trade and manufacturing operations in many different countries. They thrive in free-trade conditions and can put enormous pressure on individual governments to adopt free-trade laws and policies.
How are laws and policies made today?
Policies and laws are made or greatly influenced by international political bodies. E.g. The EU has made laws on environmental protection that must be observed by all EU countries. This is an example of political globalisation.
How has globalisation affected population in Ireland?
When does international migration increase?
Globalised communication allows people to become aware of the attractions of other countries.
Cheaper and more accessible global transport allows people to travel between countries.
Some international zones allow people to migrate freely between countries.
International migration increases, especially from economically poorer countries to countries that are more developed and will provide employment and opportunities. This happened between the 1990s and 2008 during the period of the economic boom in Ireland. people came in search of employment.
What happened during the years of economic boom?
Immigration caused Ireland’s population to increase.
Ireland’s population profile became younger because most immigrants were young adults.
Ireland’s population became more diverse, as people from many different countries and cultures entered the country.
What are the consequences of globalisation?
Population, settlement, human development.
Explain globalisation and settlement in Ireland
MNCs set up most factories and other businesses located in or close to large cities, where skilled employees and facilities (e.g. airports and motorways) are close at hand.
These companies offer well-paid employment which stimulates local economies, which creates more employment.
Many people migrate to cities to work for MNCs. Some bring their families.
This contributes to the growth of cities, which is called urbanisation.
