++++ Severe Weather Flashcards
What is severe weather
It is a weather event that is significantly different from the usual weather an area experiences
It puts people and animals in Danger or causes considerable damage to buildings
What is a tropical storm
They are huge storms that develop in the tropics
What are tropical storms called around the world
The USA and the Caribbean they’re called hurricanes.
In Australia and Southeast Asia they are known as cyclones.
And in Japan they are called typhoons.
How do hurricanes form
Hurricanes form over warm ocean water found in the tropics.
Warm moist air rises. As it Rises as it cools and condenses.
As the air condenses it releases heat which powers the storm.
More water is drawn in upwards from the ocean.
Several thunderstorms join together.
when wind speeds reach 120km/h, the storm is officially a tropical storm.
Storm develops an eye in its middle (an area of calm weather).
The storm is carried across the ocean by winds, getting stronger as it goes.
When it reaches land, friction with the land’s surface can weaken it.
How are hurricanes categorised
Hurricanes are measured using a scale called the saffir-simpson scale
The scale gives a 1-5 rating based on hurricanes sustained wind speed.
The scale estimates potential damage
list examples of short-term aid for hurricanes
Emergency shelter, food and medical supplies provided and water purifiers provided
List examples of long term aid for hurricanes
Do distribution to grow crops.
Rebuilding of roads and buildings such as hospitals and schools.
Provision of counseling to help people cope with the losses they experienced
Give an example of a severe weather event and where it affected? How did it form? (use a hurricane and learn off the formation and diagram cards)
