Describe an intervertebral disc
The intervertebral discs lie between the vertebral bodies, linking them together. The components of the disc are nucleus pulposus, annulus fibrosus and cartilagenous end-plates. The blood supply to the disc is only to the cartilagenous end-plates. The nerve supply is basically through the sinovertebral nerve.
It provides cushioning for the vertebrae and reduce the stress caused by impact. They act shock absorber for the spine. They help protect the nerves that run down the spine and between the vertebrae.
Describe some injuries to the disc and how they impact a patient
Disc sprains and slipped discs
Loss of function, pain, limited ROM
Describe CNS & PNS
CNS
Consists of the brain and spinal cord. They send information and respond with action or inhibition
PNS Consists of the nerves and ganglia. They respond to general senses (temperature, heat etc) and send the messages to the spinal cord to be interpreted and messages are sent to the brain.
How to treat lower back pain
Loosen tight muscles, breakdown scar tissue, adhesions and use release tigger points to restore function. Strengthen the core to ease back pain.
