Origin - external occipital protuberance, medial portion of superior nuchal line of the occiput, Ligamentum nuchae and spinous processes of C7 through to T12
Insertion - lateral one-third of clavicle, acromion and spine of scapula
Action - elevation of the scapula, depression of the scapula, retraction, upward rotation
Rhomboids
Origin - c7 to T5
Insertion - medial border of the scapula
Action - elevation of the scapula, retraction and downward rotation
Levator scapula
Origin - transverse processes c1-c4
Insertion - medial border of scapula between superior angle and superior portion of scapula spine
Action - elevation of the scapula and downward rotation
Serratus anterior
Origin - external surfaces of the upper 8 or 9 ribs
Insertion - anterior surface of medial border of the scapula
Action - depression of the scapula and protraction
Pec minor
Origin - 3,4 and 5 rib
Insertion - medial surface of coracoid process of the scapula
Action - depression of the scapula and protraction
