Knee Flashcards
What type of joint is the knee?
Synovial, hinge joint
What action does the knee make?
Flexion, extension and small amount of rotation
What bones make up the knee joint?
Patella, femur, tibia, fibula
Name some ligaments that make up the knee joint
Cruciate ligaments, transverse ligament
Flexion of the knee
Hamstrings
Assisted by: sartorius, gracilis, popliteus, gastroc, plantaris
Extension of the knee
Quadriceps, TFL
Medial rotation of the knee
Semi membranous, semi tendindosus, politeus, gracilis
Lateral rotation of the knee
Biceps femoris
Semi tendinous
Origin - ischial tuberocity
Insertion - proximal, medial shaft of the tibia at pes anserinus tendon
Action - flexion of the knee, medial rotation of the knee, extension of the hip,
Semi membranous
Origin - ischial tuberosity
Insertion - posterior aspect of the medial condyle of tibia
Action - flexion of the knee, medial rotation of the knee, extension of the hip, medial rotation of the hip
Biceps femoris
Origin - lateral lip of the linea aspera
Insertion - head of the fibula
Action - flexion of the knee, extension of the hip
Assists - lateral rotation of the hip
Gracilis
Origin - inferior ramus of pubis
Insertion - proximal, medial shaft of tibia at pes anserinus tendon
Action - flexion of the knee, medial rotation of the knee, adduction of the hip, medial rotation of the hip
Sartorius
Origin - anterior superior iliac spine
Insertion - proximal, medial shaft of the tibia at pes anserinus tendon
Action - flexion of the knee, flexion of the hip, abduction of the hip
Assists with lateral rotation of the hip
Popliteus
Origin - lateral condyle of the femur
Insertion - proximal, posterior aspect of the tibia
Action - flexion of the knee, medial rotation of the knee
Gastroc
Origin - condyles of the femur, posterior surfaces
Insertion - calcaneus via calcaneal tendon
Action - flexion of the knee
