Inter-carpal Joints Flashcards
Type of joint
Synovial plane joints between carpals joints
Joint between first and second row
Mid-carpal joint
More ligaments plus
Flexor retinaculum - this binds all carpal bones together and form the carpal tunnel
Movement of the wrist
Flexion - palm towards forearm
Extension - straightening flexed wrist
Abduction - limited
Adduction - ulnar deviation
What does the carpal tunnel do?
Transports tendons to the hand as well as blood vessels and nerves
Anatomical snuffbox
Hallow region between tendons of abductor pollicis longus and extensor policis Brevis and abductor pollicis longus when the thumb is extended.
Muscles of forearm
The flexors originate at common flexor tendon at medial epicondyle
The extensors back of the wrist and fingers come from common extensor origin on the lateral epicondyle
Carpo-metacarpal joints
1st of a saddle joint which allows opposition of the thumb
Inter-metacarpal joint
Synovial plane joint
Meta-carpal phalangeal joints
Synovial condyloid joints
Muscles of the hand
2 groups which form the thenar and hypothenar eminences plus deeper muscles in the palm of the hand
Small deep muscles in the hand known as intrinsic muscles
