WBC development & morphology Flashcards

1
Q

3 morphological variations in neutrophil & their indication

A
  1. Dohle bodies: grey-blue patches in cytoplasm = RNA => indicate immature neutrophil- urgency needed in inflammation
  2. Toxic granulation: small basophilic (purple) granules (smaller than basophil granules) - indicate inflammation
  3. Band neutrophils: Hyposegmented nuclei (no constrictions) => nuclear immaturity (left-shift)

Q

Describe the stages of development of myelopoiesis leading to mature granulocytes in the peripheral blood.

A
  1. Myeloblast
  2. Promyelocyte: 1º granules
  3. N/B/E myelocyte: 2º granules (dark staining)
  4. N/B/E metamyelocyte: nucleus round
  5. N/B/E band: nuclei elongated ‘sausage’
  6. PMN / basophil / eosinophil: constriction of nuclei
