WBC development & morphology Flashcards
1
Q
3 morphological variations in neutrophil & their indication
A
- Dohle bodies: grey-blue patches in cytoplasm = RNA => indicate immature neutrophil- urgency needed in inflammation
- Toxic granulation: small basophilic (purple) granules (smaller than basophil granules) - indicate inflammation
- Band neutrophils: Hyposegmented nuclei (no constrictions) => nuclear immaturity (left-shift)
2
Q
Indication of hypersegmentation in neutrophil morphology
A
5+ neutrophil w/ 5 lobes OR
automatically when 1+ w/ 6 lobes
3
Q
A morphological variations in lymphocyte & indication of what condition
A
reactive lymphocyte: kinda looks like monocytes bc irregular outline; decreased N:C ratio
-> indicate mononucleolsis
4
Q
Describe the stages of development of myelopoiesis leading to mature granulocytes in the peripheral blood.
A
- Myeloblast
- Promyelocyte: 1º granules
- N/B/E myelocyte: 2º granules (dark staining)
- N/B/E metamyelocyte: nucleus round
- N/B/E band: nuclei elongated ‘sausage’
- PMN / basophil / eosinophil: constriction of nuclei
