waves - ultrasound Flashcards
1
Q
what are ultrasounds?
A
sound waves with a frequency higher than the upper limits of human hearing so at least 20,000 Hz
2
Q
do ultrasound reflect?
A
partially at the boundary between 2 different densities
3
Q
what is ultrasound scanning used for?
A
- producing images of internal organs such as heart or kidney as long as organ isn’t surrounded by bone
- images of foetus
- used in industrial imaging to detect hidden defects or a problem with the weld
4
Q
how is ultrasound scanning safer than x-rays?
A
does cause mutations or increase risk of cancer
5
Q
how to work out distance of ultrasound?
A
s = v x t
distance (m) = speed (m/s) x time (s)
divide answer by 2 if you’re only working out one direction not the direction and reflection
