magnetism - the motor effect Flashcards
what happens when we place a wire with a magnetic field into a another magnetic field?
the magnetic field around the wire now interacts with the magnetic field between the magnets. the wire now experiences a force. if force is in upward direction, this would cause the wire to move upwards- the motor effect
how do you calculate size of force in motor effect?
don’t need to learn equation but what does it apply to? what is the magnetic flux density?
force (N) = magnetic flux density (T) x current (A) x length (m)
F=B x I x L
- applies to a wire which is at right angles to the magnetic field
- magnetic flux density is a measure of the strength of the magnetic field
how to determine direction of force in motor effect?
use Fleming’s left hand rule. place your thumb, first finger and second finger so they are at right angles. point first finger in the direction of the magnetic field from north to south. then point second finger in the direction of the conventional current (+ to -). direction of thumb shows direction of the motion (the force)
what happens if conductor is parallel to the magnetic field into the motor effect?
it will not experience a force. if conductor is at right angles to magnetic field it will experience a force
