conservation of momentum example of a van crashing into a car

A

van travelling towards stationary car. it is moving so has momentum (mass x velocity) in forward direction . stationary car has no momentum as not moving. now van collided with car. car + van move together with a lower velocity than initial velocity of van. total momentum of car and van together is the same as initial momentum of van by itself. total momentum before is the same as after collision. it has been conserved

conservation of momentum example of a cannon ball and cannon

A

before cannon fires, both cannon ball and cannon are not moving so total momentum is zero. she fires, cannonball moving at very large velocity so cannon ball now has momentum in forward direction. at same time, cannon recoils (backwards), cannon has momentum in backward direction which equals forward momentum of cannon ball. this means total momentum after firing is zero. momentum before firing was zero and after firing is also zero so momentum has been conserved.
