waves - sound waves Flashcards
how do air particles vibrate?
from side to side and can pass through 1 medium to another
what happens when sound waves hit the cone of a microphone?
they vibrate which the microphone converts into electrical signals
how do sound waves work in human ear”
they funnel into ear hitting the eardrum (a thin membrane) causing it to vibrate along with inner ear. this creates sensation of sound
what do sound waves in air trigger?
vibrations in solids but only works over a limited range of frequencies
what is the normal frequency of normal human hearing?
20 Hz - 20,000 Hz. if the frequencies are outside of this then they won’t make the eardrum vibrate
what happens as sound waves move from 1 medium to another?
the speed can change
e.g sound waves travel much faster in solids than in gases. particles are much closer so vibrations pass easier
what happens to wavelength as wave speed changes from 1 medium to another? what about the frequency?
it changes. the frequency however does not change as waves would have to be destroyed or created at the boundary which is impossible
what does a cathode ray oscilloscope do?
represents sound waves as if they were transverse waves instead of longitudinal
high frequency=
low frequency=
high pitch
low pitch
small amplitude=
big amplitude=
quiet sound
loud sound
when can sound waves only move through medium?
as they move through particles moving
why can’t sound waves pass through a vacuum?
there are no particles
can sound waves be reflected?
yes as an echo
