Waves Flashcards
Frequency
How many complete waves there are per second passing a certain point.
What can waves do
Waves can transfer energy and information without transferring matter
What is a time period
The time it takes in seconds for one complete wave to pass a point
What is a transverse wave
In a transverse wave the vibrations are at 90° to the direction energy is transferred by the wave
What is a longitudinal wave
In longitudinal waves the vibrations are along the same direction as the wave transfers energy
Oscillate
move or swing back and forth in a regular rhythm.
What is a property that all the waves on the electromagnetic spectrum share
They all travel at the same speed in a vacuum
If the angle of incidence is less then critical angle what happens
Most of the light passes out but a little bit of it is internally reflected
If the angle of incidence is equal to critical angle what happens
The emerging ray comes out along the surface. And there is quite a bit of internal reflection.
If the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle what happens
No light comes out. It’s all internally reflected, total internal reflection happens
Sin critical angle =
1/ refractive index
What does critical angle mean
The angle at which refraction just/still occurs
To show refraction what apparatus do you need
Ray box
Paper ruler
