Section 5 - Particle Theory And Temperature In Gases Flashcards
How do kinetic energy and temperature effect each other?
They are proportional to each other.
What happens if you double the temperature of a gas? Why is that?
If you double the temperature (kelvins) of a gas you double the average kinetic energy of the particles.
The temperature of a gas (in kelvins) is proportional to the average kinetic energy of its particles.
What happens if you heat up a gas?
The speed of the particles will increase as you increase the kinetic energy.
How does Brownian motion support particle theory?
It supports particle theory as large heavy particles can be moved with Brownian motion by smaller, lighter particles traveling at high speeds. Proving that smaller particles do move in random, zigzag motion.
What is Brownian motion?
It is the random, zigzag motion of any particle in a suspension.
What is absolute 0?
0 kelvin which = -273 degrees celcius
Absolute 0 is the start of the Kelvin scale.
How is the kinetic energy of the particles at absolute 0?
The atoms will have as little kinetic energy as it is possible to get.
How are the celsius and Kelvin scales related?
A temperature change of one degrees Celsius is also a change of 1 Kelvin.
The only difference is where the 0 occurs.
How do you convert degrees celsius to kelvins?
Add 273
How do you convert kelvins to degrees Celsius?
Subtract 273
