Section 5 - Pressure And Density Flashcards
How do you know if an object floats on a liquid?
The object will float if it has a lower density than the fluid.
What is density a measure of?
Compactness of a substance
How do you measure the density of an object?
Take measurements of mass and volume and use the formula.
What can you do if the volume is difficult to measure?
Immerse the object in water in a measuring container. The amount the volume reading increases by is the volume of the object.
What is pressure?
It is a measure of the force applied to the surface of something.
Pressure =
Force/area pascal = N/m2
How does the pressure act in gases and liquids at rest?
It acts equally in all directions.
In gases and liquids where does the pressure increase?
The pressure increases with depth. The pressure at the bottom of the sea is higher than at the top.
What is pressure difference?
It is the difference in pressure between two points in a liquid or gas.
It depends on height difference and the density of a substance. Gravity has an effect too.
Pressure difference =
Height * density * gravitational field strength
Density =
Mass/volume
