Water Flow Through Plants Flashcards
How many separate vessels do plants have?
Two.
What are the two separate vessels called?
Xylem and phloem.
Where do both types of vessels go?
They travel to every part of the plant.
What does the phloem tube transport around the plant?
Food.
What is the phloem tube made up of?
It’s made up of columns of living cells.
What do the cells have at the end of them to allow food to flow through?
Small holes.
What do the columns of living cells transport?
They transport food substances (mainly dissolved sugars) made in the leaves to growing regions and storage organs of the plant.
True or false the transport of the dissolved sugars goes in both directions?
True.
What does the xylem tubes do?
They carry water and minerals from the roots to the stem and leaves.
What are the xylem tubes made up of?
They are made up of dead cells joined end to end with no end walls between them
What is transpiration?
The loss of water from a plant.
What is transpiration caused by?
Evaporation and diffusion of water from inside the leaves.
What does transpiration cause?
A slight shortage of water in the leaf, so more water is drawn up from the rest of the plant through the xylem vessels to replace it.
What does constant transpiration stream mean?
Water is constantly drawn up from the roots to accommodate water loss from the leaves.
